Itch: Everything You Didn’t Want to Know About What Makes You Scratch by Anita Sanchez, illustrated by Gilbert Ford. PICTURE BOOK/NON-FICTION. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018. $17. 9780544811010
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
This book has nine chapters that each give historical and biological information, lots of fun facts, and tips on preventing and treating itches. There are two general information chapters: skin! and Itching?. The other chapters cover lice, fleas, plants, mosquitos, tarantulas, fungus, and bedbugs. There is a good mix of silly sketches and informative diagrams.
I thought this book was very interesting. Not all of the information is welcome, like knowing how mosquitos saw into your skin, but that will make it all the more interesting and enticing to kids. I learned that you can put the inside of a banana peel on an itch to sooth and heal it. There is a lot of writing in this book without feeling cumbersome, making it a potentially great fit for a reader ready for longer books.
