BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) – ADVISABLE.
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
A young child’s first day of school is depicted in the illustrations. The text that accompanies these scenes names a color to match the mood. The color jade is used to describe arriving on your scooter to school, ecru for story time and so forth.
I loved that specialized color names were used, making a reader curious about the range of colors beyond the obvious. I also love the message that comes across in the book that all emotions are good and make us who we are. My one complaint is that there is a page depicting nap time, which I think will be alienating to older kids, who also might enjoy this book. The main character looks like she could be anywhere between 4 and 8 years old, but napping narrows that range.
