But Not the Armadillo by Sandra Boynton - ADVISABLE

But Not the Armadillo by Sandra Boynton. BOARD BOOK. Simon and Schuster, 2018. $6. 9781481481007.

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: Pre-K - AVERAGE

This is basically the sequel (if board books have sequels) to the absolutely fantastic Boynton book, But Not the Hippopotamus which ends with the line, "But not the armadillo." Here we get to find out how the armadillo feels about not being part of the group, and what we learn is...he's okay with it. The armadillo is a pretty laid-back guy and goes wherever his nose takes him. Even when encouraged to join in some running and playing with a hippopotamus, he doesn't give into peer pressure and just does his own thing.

I was very excited to pick up this book as I definitely consider myself a Boynton fan. Compared to her earlier books, however, this book was just okay. The text rhymes well, and the characters are cute (because Boynton uses the same characters over and over, and that's fine!), but the actual story was just nice. It didn't blow me out of the water and this is not jumping to the top of my "Must Buy!" board book list for upcoming baby showers. Still, its Sandra Boynton and carries with it some hard-to-explain pure delight, so I can't really NOT recommend it. I liked it--not loved--but liked.
