BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Wilma Pearl Mankiller was the first woman Cherokee Chief. The book tells the story of her youth and growing years, her years as an activist, and her time as the deputy chief. Against opposition, she was elected as chief and served for ten years. She did a lot of good for her people and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
This is step 3 book (Grades 1-3). The book is interesting, engaging, and inspirational. The illustrations add to the overall appeal.
