When Jayylen learns that his beloved brother Manuel won’t be home from Christmas because the army needs him, he will do what he has to in order to get his family to him instead. But after all he does, will he have enough money for everyone?
Lavette expresses the sadness at not having a beloved family member at home for Christmas. While her resolution to the problem is a little far-fetched, the sentiment is sincere. The illustrations feel rushed and unpolished. Jayylen and his family are Black.
