BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
This is an historical fiction picture book based on Lola Huerta. Lola is a talented and outgoing girl who helps run the family motel in Delano, California. She learns to work hard and help others, but will she be brave enough to speak up when it matters? The story is a glimpse into her childhood home, and how her loving and hard-working family shaped her into the brave and compassionate activist she became.
I love how easily Torres creates personalities for the characters showing their emotions through the dialogue and descriptions. The pictures capture the emotions of the family and contribute to the connection the reader feels to them. At the end there is a short description of Lola Huerta's life and political activism. It is a great little book to introduce children to this inspiring example of compassion and bravery. The characters in this book are Hispanic families and workers.
