AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
In this picture book without words, a girl walks through her war-torn land. One day she sees a yellow butterfly. Instead of destruction, she begins to see scenes of peace and hope.
I liked the contrast of the black and white images along with the bright yellow butterfly. It is easy to see how the yellow butterfly represents peach and hope. This book will be difficult for children to understand on their own. But with help from an adult, could be understood. At the end of the book, there are guidelines for sharing a wordless picture book along with information about how to guide a conversation with children about war. The author/illustrator is Ukrainian and the story comes from his experiences living in a war-torn country.
