BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
Jayylen, an African American boy, did not know what Juneteenth, Zydeco or a frottoir was until he learned about his enslaved ancestors from his Paw Paw Jimmy. Jayylen had learned to play zydeco on a frottoir with his Paw Paw. One day, Jayylen was out and saw a sign that announced a famous Zydeco player was in town. Jayylen planned a big surprise for his grandfather on Juneteenth.
Illustrations in the Little Golden Book are realistic, modern and colorful. Text and illustrations are matched well, although some of the words would be difficult for the younger group to read by themselves. Jayylen’s Juneteenth Surprise is for adults to read to children. Lavette’s text is educational and informative, but the appeal is not there for everyone. The main characters are African American.
