Dagfrid is a Viking girl, living on an island where they eat only fish. Dagrid hates fish. The girls are only allowed to wear long dresses and their hair in braids that are wrapped up into buns on the sides of their heads, ear buns. Dagfrid hates long dresses and ear buns. Girls are not allowed to do anything other than cook, sew and sometimes fish. Dagfrid wants more so she devises a plan to leave, explore and do something different.
Illustrations in Dagfrid, the Viking Girl are simple, but entertaining and funny. They truly depict Viking life on a small, restrictive island. Mathieu-Daude’s story is engaging and hilarious, having Dagfrid annoyed with mostly everything in her life. The ending is surprising, silly, and will make the reader reach for the next book in the series. The characters are Caucasian.
