13yo Piper and her autistic 10yo brother Phoenix must move from Atlanta to Maine when their mother dies. Their father has been missing for two years. Piper and Phoenix have to go live with their aunt who treats them badly. Their aunt has an extensive collection of books. One of these books calls to the children. The magic begins as they read the unusual book.

I enjoyed the book but it took me a few chapters to get used to the writing style. It is written like the magical book is talking to the reader and the book kept using references from other children's books. I did not recognize all of the references and I have read a large number of children's books. This might be confusing for elementary-age readers. Also, belief in God is a big theme in this book. Both children are white.
