BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Pauline lives in a busy, noisy house. 5 people live there (almost 6 as her mother is expecting) and Pauline, the eldest sibling, would like a quiet spot of her own. She finally discovers a place under the stairs and her parents let her make it her own, with a mattress and bookcase, and everything she needs. It's her place and her imagination can run wild. Even better though, she imagines she could run away and jump on a passing ship and travel the world but then discovers that her family would miss her.
Translated from French, I'm sure some kids could certainly relate. I found the story charming. The illustrations are a cross between traditional picture books and graphics and sometimes the story is told in panels. Pauline's grandmother and father are French, and some of the dialogue is in French.
