It's the last day of school - the teachers told the kids to have a good summer, and they certainly will. Playing in the streets together from Breakfast until dinner was how the kids spent their summer days in Brooklyn. With the older kids looking out for the younger ones, the street is alive with kids.
What an exciting time! Woodson doesn't say when, but the illustrations are evidence that it's the 60s-70s. The clothes, the bikes, the skates, the hairstyles - so nostalgic. I didn't grow up in Brooklyn, but I certainly remember having a similar experience in the summers of my childhood. Would make a fun conversation starter - do kids still play together like this? The characters are very diverse - the author is black and mentions kids speaking Spanish, English, Polish, German and Chinese.
