Saajin is so excited to start school. He's certain he will make a bunch of new friends. On the first day, when the teacher calls roll, she mispronounces Saajin's name. Soon all the kids are calling him Say-jin rather than Sah-jin. He doesn't correct anyone, but doesn't like the way his name sounds at school. When his dad hears him introduce himself as Say-jin they have a talk about how important Saajin's name is, and what it means. Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes and it's OK to correct them.
Names are so important, and this is a perfect story about honoring a student's name pronunciation. Great adults, I loved the teacher's appropriate reaction when he finally said something. Kids will like this, but the message for teachers is essential. Learn to say their names! Saajin is Sikh.
