Unsettled by Reem Faruqi - OPTIONAL

Unsettled by Reem Faruqi
, 352 pages. NOVEL IN VERSE. Harper, 2021. $17

Content: G (some bullying)

 BUYING ADVISORY: EL - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Nurah’s father has taken a job in America – Peachtree, GA to be specific. Wrenched from her family and friends in Pakistan, Nurah struggles to adapt to American ways. It’s only when she’s in the water, competing for a place on the swim team.

Unfortunately, the story comes over as very underdeveloped. Being written in verse, in snippets mostly, rather than longer form poems, is a definite hindrance to developing the storylines and showing Nurah’s struggles in a way kids can connect to.
