BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
A baby elephant is captured and brought to a circus where it is trained and then performs, and after many years taken to a sanctuary to live out its days. Sub-subtitle: Light Verse on a Heavy Subject
Yolen uses few, but very expressive words, to convey the story, while Helquist’s eloquent illustrations show the elephant’s wide variety of emotions - students will understand the anguish and the moments of happiness in the elephant’s eyes. If you were to read this out loud to a class, be prepared to talk about captured elephants and circuses.
