As an intelligence contractor with the Navy 12yo Alexis’s Mom is away on long voyages frequently – this time in a submarine. But Mom always leaves behind a puzzle for Alexis – helping her hone her code-cracking skills. The latest puzzle will take Alexis all over her town of Laie, Hawaii – and definitely too close to the ocean – even out onto it, which Alexis dreads, ever since her accident. With the help of Uncle and his dog Sarge, Alexis may solve the puzzle in time for Mom’s return, and, perhaps, fix a bit of herself.

I was very excited to see a book set in Hawaii, especially Laie, where I went to college. But I was disappointed that the main character, though born in Hawaii, is a haole, not a Polynesian. Someday Polynesian authors will get the audience they deserve, too. That disappointment aside, Alexis shows courage when needed and it is fun to watch her follow the clues all over Laie – maybe readers will, like me, be worried that she won’t solve the puzzle in time!
