A girl and her family leave before sunrise on a long train journey to the North. After the end of the Underground Railroad came another exodus from the south overland, usually on trains. The slave system made way to sharecropping and many blacks were as good as enslaved through debt. So many blacks snuck out and onto trains to flee the South.
Any library with a historical non-fiction collection will need this additional facet of American history. The Cline-Ransome-Ransome team create excellent non-fiction reads.
