BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
A little boy is playing at the park when another child shouts "You've only got one leg" and asks "what happened to you?" Instead of telling, Joe asks what they think, and all the other kids start shouting ideas - all of which are wrong and Joe simply says "no." Eventually the other kids start playing with Joe and realize it doesn't matter what happened.
Originally published in England, Catchpole, who has a similar disability, teaches a great lesson about manners, and empathy. I liked the cute illustrations with all sorts of multicultural kids. Joe's facial expressions are my favorite. Also includes a letter to the adults, about how to handle a curious child who may be asking personal questions, and helps them through an awkward situation.
