BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) – OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
Our nameless protagonist and his ten friends celebrate the athleticism of their cats in My Cat Does Ballet. When other kids complain about what their cats do – like rip up toilet paper, or swing on ceiling fans – our narrator shares all the cool ballet moves he sees his cat do.
My gut feeling is that this is going to be a niche topic. I don’t know how many elementary school age children wax poetic about their cats, or who are familiar enough with ballet to understand all the terminology of the movements. But I do think that general audiences would enjoy it as a read-aloud; however, they just might not pick it up of their own volition. The back material was pretty interesting, highlighting past ballet dancers and providing a glossary of ballet terms.
