BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
This discusses the history of the White House and the enslaved people who labored there. It recounts how the land for Washington DC was stolen from indigenous peoples and how many of them chose to leave due to violence. The enslaved households of the presidents are discussed. Also discussed is the rebuilding of the White House after it was burned by the British. The story then continues with the Civil Rights movement and peaceful protests that were held.
I liked the Reflect questions, as they made me stop and think. There was a lot of thought put into the pictures used throughout the book. It also highlights the contributions of African Americans to American history.
