BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
Let's take a look at the 1990s! Beanie Babies, Tamagatchis, Build-a-Bear, and upgraded gaming systems from Nintendo and Sony top the toy charts. Music was being purchased on CDs , and rap, grunge and hip-hop were popular. Kids were watching Rugrats and Barney on TV while they ate Lunchables. We see the trendy clothes, hairstyles and accessories, and there's a nod to the art of Lisa Frank. Communication was changing too, with email, cell phones, and caller ID. The 90s also introduced affordable personal computers.
This Level 2 Ready to Read begins with a glossary, which I love - helps introduce the content as well as activates background knowledge. I don't see a kid picking this up, there's a lot of text and it's mostly lists - but I think their parents would think it's fun and enjoy telling them all about the movies they went to and the weird things they wore. Quite nostalgic, the photos are cool and the illustrations are silly. Multi-cultural kids are represented in the illustrations, as well as in the photos.
