AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Wombat realizes that a wildfire is raging above, but he feels safe in his underground burrow. Just as he’s about to lie down with his favorite quilt, he hears the frantic voice of his friend Wallaby and lets him into his home. Wallaby falls asleep with Wombat’s quilt. Soon other friends need help as well. Kookaburra, Platypus, Koala, and Sugar Glider all need help and Wombat welcomes them in as they mess up and take over his neat burrow. Wombat is very bighearted, but will he ever be rid of his guests?
I was very impressed with Wombat Said Come In. I enjoyed Wombat’s big heartedness, and the way he sacrificed his own comfort to help his friends. Masterful illustrations visually tell the story. Brian Lies incredibly captures the anxiety and relief in the body language and face of each animal.
