BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
A young girl thinks the woman who lives at the empty lot on the corner is really a queen who has traveled all over and even bravely fought dragons. She must have lost her palace. The girl and her mother are kind to her, bringing her tea and toast, and something for her "royal hound" too. The girl sees her at night, sitting on the corner (protecting the neighborhood). Then one night, something happens in the neighborhood, and the Queen warns everyone just in time. Now the neighborhood sees her.
An inspiring story about looking for value in everyone. I loved Nia Tudor's illustrations, full of expression. A nice read-aloud with some great discussion points. Features Multicultural characters, the girl and her mother are black, and the "queen" is white (per the illustrations).
