Kate moved with her father to Fayerweather Island when she was 4yo and when she was 12yo he taught her to help him with the lighthouse. As her father got older, she took over most of his duties and after his death, she officially became the keeper.
Another excellent picture book to show modern children how different life used to be. From growing all of their food on the island to carrying oil tot eh lamps four times a night – it is a life that is almost unimaginable to us now. Sutton’s illustrations have a raw quality that reflects and amplifies the danger Kate lived.
