Assata wants more than anything to join the Dora Milaje, the team of warriors that protects Wakanda just like her cousin and grandmother. But Assata was born with a disease that disabled her. She now needs a wheelchair and feels like her dream is impossible. She excels with her mind in science and technology. Her idol Shuri is so impressed that she asks Assata to be her assistant and join the Wakandan Design Group. Assata searches her sole and wonders if people should walk away from their dreams because they seem impossible?
I really liked The Courage to Dream. The message of not giving up on your dreams just because it seems impossible is a challenge facing all of us. Kids and adults will be inspired to do hard things. The beautiful detailed illustrations bring Assata’s dilemma to life.
