Judy and Joyce were twins. They did everything together. When it was time to start kindergarten, Joyce was enrolled, but Judy, who didn't speak, had special needs, known as Down syndrome, and could not go with Joyce. Instead, Judy was sent to live at a special school. The family could visit, but they couldn't bring Judy home. When Joyce became an adult, she arranged to get Judy out of the facility, and although she still couldn't speak she moved to California to live with her sister. Joyce took Judy to a local art studio that specializes in people with special needs, and eventually, Judy started to create art.
Unbound is a beautiful tribute by the sister of this remarkable artist! The collaborative illustrations are a mix of watercolor, pencils, and mixed media including found objects to convey Judith's art. Includes a timeline, author/illustrator notes, and a list of sources. So happy to add Unbound to my picture book biographies.
