BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
Herodotus the Hedgehog overhears (and watches) a bear make an offering to the great Bear Spirit, he is curious so he asks the other animals if they also have Great Spirits. All of them seem to have a Great Spirit that gave them something, and each is different. Until he asks the Hoopoe Bird, the bird tells Herodotus that there's only one Great Spirit who made everything, but the Crow disagrees and says the Great Spirit is just made up. Herodotus doesn't know what to think, so he closes his eyes and thinks for himself.
This book would prompt the reader to examine their own beliefs, or can be used to start a discussion about different religions. Kind of a deep subject for a picture book - I'm not sure this is the right audience for this topic.
