Sab is turning 11 soon, but her mother is away on a business trip, her dad lives with his boyfriend at the resort he inherited from Sab’s grandmother, and her guardian, her older sister, is not speaking to Dad. Sab doesn’t know what is going on between Dad and sister, but with the help of her best friend, Pepper, she is hoping to repair the relationship in time to celebrate her birthday as a family.
Set in the Philippines, Sab’s life seems just like an American kid’s life, except for some vocabulary and small differences sprinkled in the narrative. Many readers will not pick up that this is taking place in another country – which both works for and against the book. For, because kids can see that the lives of kids in other countries are not that different from their own. Against, because it does little to show the cultural differences, so this can’t really be used as part of unit exploring other parts of the world. Beyond that, Sab’s story is sweet.
