Dragons Get Colds Too by Rebecca Roan, illustrated by Charles Santoso. PICTURE BOOK. Bloomsbury (Macmillan), 2019. $18. 9781681190440
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
There is pretty set pattern for the text of the book. The narrator gives a “step” for taking care of a sick dragon, then a related “fact” and a “tip” and then a page of plot. It is slightly reminiscent of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
It was never very clear exactly what this book was going for - it was almost funny but wasn’t and it was almost a parody of kids being sick, but didn’t really nail that either. Even the illustrations felt flat. I do think it is fun to read while you are sick and fun to see yourself in books, so I can see the appeal there, but otherwise this book is lacking much appeal.
