An Anty-War Story by Tony Ross - NOT RECOMMENDED

An Anty-War Story by Tony Ross, PICTURE BOOK. Anderson Press USA, 2018. $18. 978154153564051799

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - NOT RECOMMENDED

AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW

Douglas is the only ant with a name in his ant community. He hoped he would be of service to the ants by carrying food in the line of ants, but instead he is assigned to be soldier. Needless to say, things do not go well.

Tony Ross has presented a definite antiwar book, but it's not for a picture book audience. It's startling, confusing, and suddenly shifts from ant hill to WWI trenches. I'm still wondering what happened. Be prepared to have a discussion about war after reading this with your child.
