This Sunday will be the last time Mom and Sam walk to the laundry-mat. They are sad because they don't have enough money for rent and must leave their apartment and move far away to live with grandpa in his very small trailer home. Sam makes a wish on the washing machine and hopes that the washing machine will make it come true. Sam puts their leftover coins in the vending machine that starts spilling out many coins. Has Sam's wish come true?

The Wishing Machine is a sad book and it doesn't really have a happy ending. I feel like the title builds up hope just to have the hope dashed in the ending. I didn't really like Hillman's book for kids, although adults will feel sorrow for those who live in difficult circumstances.
