The stone age ended only about 4,000 years ago. Giant beasts roamed the hills and lived among humans. Early humans were excellent hunters and trappers that were starting to use stone tools. Animals provided resources of meat, skins, and bones. Some of the giant animals that roamed the earth with our ancestors were the woolly mammoth, elephant bird, giant short-faced bear, giant snake Wonambi, the towering ape Gigantopithecus, saber-toothed cat, giant short-faced kangaroo, European hippo, Siberian unicorn, Haast's Eagle, Glyptodon, giant lemur, Steller's sea cow, the giant wombat, and many more. These animals were lost due to climate change and overhunting. We know many things about these animals from scientists and archaeologists discoveries.
I found Stone Age Beasts packed full of interesting facts about giant animals that have been mostly overlooked. I like the 18 engaging profiles packed with fascinating facts, and I like learning how they interacted with humans and in which part of the earth they lived. The illustrations are wonderful and detailed. Children will be fascinated if all they do is look at the pictures.
