Stop! Bot! by James Yang. PICTURE BOOK. Viking, 2019. $18. 9780425288818
BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
A little boy in a big city has a remote-control bot. He loses control and the bot flies upward. It is seen passing floor after floor rising higher and higher up a skyscraper. People try to catch the boy’s bot to help him out by using all kinds of items they have on hand, like a broom, a trombone, etc. The last person the bot passes has a huge cluster of bananas, and tries to catch the bot with his bananas. The bananas do not catch the bot, but a King Kong-like monkey on top of the building catches it. The monkey trades the bot for the large bunch of bananas. The bot is returned to the boy, and in his family’s excitement, his sister accidentally let go of her balloons and they wish they had more bananas.
Stop! Bot! has excellent artistry that grabs your attention, and the text is very simple for young readers. My 2-year-old loved the book and pictures, and following along the simple story. My 5-year-old also enjoyed attempting to read the book on her own. It is very simple and not too overwhelming for her.
