Hide and Seek is about children who live in portraits on a wall. At night, the children from Shiverhawk Hall can leave their portraits and play together in the outside world. The story begins with the children all waking up to twin girls missing from their portrait. The children all realized it was a game of hide-and-seek and raced off through the gardens to find them. Eventually they find them, having had a lot of fun along the way. Immediately after, a storm begins. They race back to their room and climb back in to their portraits just in time for the sun to come up again.

Hide and Seek has excellent rhythm/cadence. The artwork is very well done. I found the twin characters who were hiding (long, straight black hair, pale skin in white dresses and bows) creepy. They reminded me of horror movies. However, most children would not make that association the way an adult might, and therefore, they wouldn’t find it creepy at all. I do not think the author’s intention was to make the book or artwork feel horror-like.
