Otto and his mother, a skilled coat maker, move to the frozen city of Hodeldorf. One day his mother leaves to go on errands and she does not return. Otto is no longer able to pay for his room and board and is taken in by a group of orphans, the Tattercoats. They live by a strict code, sleep on roof tops by warm chimneys and steal only what they need to survive. Otto makes some friends in the group, Nim and the outcast Blink. They help him look for his mother. They have lots of adventures on their way, they meet fascinating and sometimes scary characters. Some help and some try to trick the children. They must learn who to trust and who not to trust.

I really liked this book -- a great fantasy with believable characters and setting. The story was moving along quickly with twists and turns to keep me reading to see how it would all come out at the end. I liked the short chapters and I also liked how well the story flowed. I will recommend this book and I will have a read-a-loud with a couple of my grandchildren. It is like a fantasy fairy tale of old. I think this particular story will be treasured for years to come.
