"You Are 25% Banana" is a wonderful introduction to the topic of genetics. How are we related to the world around us? How can we be so similar and yet so different? The concept of DNA is simplified into "recipes," "codes," and "instructions." Humans are compared to other living organisms and then to each other. It is science at the most basic and engaging level.
"You Are 25% Banana" is bright and bold. DNA examples chosen are animals that children love and will enjoy being related to. The story ends with the thought that we are so similar to everyone else on the planet but still unique individuals. A mixed-race family is shown to illustrate DNA combining, and the final picture shows races from all around the world.
