Mei Yu has just arrived in Canada from China. She is the new kid in school and a new country, trying to learn a new language, which she finds terrifying and overwhelming.

This story is based on the author's experiences. The words in black are the words Mei understands and those in green print are those she doesn't. When she gets to school almost all the words are in green except for her name, which gives the reader some idea of what it's like to learn a new language. The art is bright, appealing, and well-drawn. A great book for both teaching and learning empathy and how to reach out to others. Mei is Chinese.
