BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ESSENTIAL

10yo Ferris is navigating the intricacies of her quirky family. Her 6yo sister, Pinky, is a one-woman crime spree, her Uncle Ted has left his wife to paint a history of the world, and Ferris is worried that her ghost-seeing grandma is going to move on to the Great Beyond.

There are overtones of Flora and Ulysses, but DiCamillo always manages to weave beautiful lessons into her stories, and the same goes for this slice-of-life tale. It's hard to imagine a 4th grader with the vocabulary Ferris has, but it's a grand read. By the end, you will feel like you know Ferris' family and want to give your own a hug. No culture or race is specified.
