A young traveler saw a tree in the distance where the villagers like to rest in its shade and he decided to join them. When he arrived, a rich man said that it was his tree and his shade and that everyone had to leave. He asked the rich man if he would sell him the shade from the tree. The rich man thought the traveler was very foolish but wanted to make money. He sold the shade of the tree to the traveler. From then on the villagers were allowed to rest in the shade. But when the sun set, the shade traveled and covered the rich man's house, and the traveler entered the house. What will the rich man do?
I enjoyed Suzy Lee's retelling of a Korean folk tale about a young man outwitting a rich, selfish man. The illustrations are simple and striking.
