Teenager Jacqueline Gauthier worked with the French Resistance during WWII delivering documents to Jewish families to help them escape the Nazis. The papers were carefully hidden in a toy duck. Who would suspect a young girl bringing a toy to a family?
I loved this story of courage during the Holocaust. In the author's note, there's a photograph of Jacqueline's documents as well as the duck (now part of an artifact collection in Israel). The illustrations are tones of browns and orange - makes Paris look very smoky and scary. An interesting addition to my holocaust stories. Jacqueline is (believe it or not) Jewish!
