Otter and Beaver are friends. Otter likes to play in the river with the sticks and twigs, while Beaver wants to work in the river and build a dam with the sticks and twigs. When Beaver has taken all the sticks and twigs, what will Otter play with? How will these friends work out this conflict of interest?
The illustrations are swirls and swaths of color showing movement and energy. Otter and Beaver are presented more as abstract ideas of shape than realistic animals. Beaver comes across as a demanding character but at the end is an example of forgiveness. There is complexity inside the simplicity of the story. Otter and Beaver are gender neutral.
