Kwame Alexander tells about American slavery, as though a teacher is giving a lesson to her class. The students respond and are trying to promote change.
Alexander's text told a story of hardship and perseverance and hope, the modern day connections were good, but it made the book feel disjointed. I get what he was doing, using a modern classroom with their feeling and their resolve but it wasn't evident from the beginning. The mixed media illustrations were often odd. I didn't like the clay sculptures photographed with illustrated backgrounds. The traditional illustrations were very nice, and the sketches that went with the modern day classroom were wonderful. I have mixed feelings about An American Story. The Characters are Black
