AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
A young boy goes for a walk near his home and enjoys the sights and sounds of a garden, a meadow, and a brook. Told in rhyme, the story introduces a variety of colors, sounds, and animals found in nature.
The story is simple and the illustrations are colorful and detailed. The end pages give more details about the animals and insects found on the walk which helps an adult reader share interesting facts with younger children and gives older children more difficult text to read for themselves. I also like how the author draws attention to the animals and insects. For example, you read, "Who's that buzzing by? Listen. See. A fuzzy, YELLOW busy...." and then the page is turned to find a large picture of a BEE. However, before turning the page, a child can find the bee that's hidden on the previous page. The same technique is used with all the other animals or insects; all have a hidden picture to find. Each animal is described by their color, so this doubles as a book to teach colors. And children will have fun mimicking the sounds of the various creatures. Overall, a lovely book that I would enjoy reading multiple times to a child.
