AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Kalamata and her friends are trying to practice their dance routine for an upcoming talent show, but they keep getting side-tracked by different things each person wants in the performance. To solve their problem, they take a magical journey to discover how different ingredients bring different things to Malaysian cooking. Likewise, each of them brings something special to their dance performance and together they make magic.
The illustrations are bright and engaging. This could be a fun book in a school library for Southeast Asian/Pacific Island culture, or in a secondary Foods class to talk about introductory Food science. It is sort of a niche topic, but the overall message about working together, despite differences, is one that will appeal to all ages.
