Lily is riding with Grandma to her new home in Iowa. Grandma suggests they try to find 10 beautiful things along the way. The sunrise, a red-winged blackbird, a creek, windmill blades. Lily is still worried, but the game helps, even the approaching storm is beautiful, but the most beautiful thing, the 10th one, only happens when they get there.
Illustrations that could be framed, beautiful text - "the smell of mud . . . poured itself into some of the empty spaces in her" What a remarkable book. We don't know why Lily is moving, but there's an edge of sadness that can't be overlooked. I loved the things Grandma found beautiful, not just sights but sounds and smells as well. Such a sweet, gentle read.
