BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) – OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
A young child can hear a whale out at sea. Nobody else in the family can hear the whale, but this child is driven to the shore as the whale calls out. The child feels like the whale is sometimes joyful and sometimes sad, and the whale’s sadness comes from all the times that it has been hunted. When the child whispers, “sorry” to the whale the whale returns with its calf.
Concentrating on the harmony between humans and whales, this picture book has a mystical feel between the child and the whales. There is not a compelling story, but a feeling and sorrow for endangered right whales. The last two pages of the book give scientific facts about the whales and a history of their endangerment. The illustrations are mediocre and although I am an advocate of teaching our children about endangered animals, this book implies a lot about the whales’ story and leaves all the information to those willing to read the facts at the back.
