BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Starting in February, the students in Room 5 write a letter to Earth describing what they are doing in their classroom that month - February was consuming less electricity and using reusable water bottles. Earth writes back with a thank you and more information about how what they are doing helps. Their next letter responds and tells Earth what they are doing the next month - the letters go through the summer and into the next year, and the readers can see how the kids have changed because of the efforts they've made to be Earth Heroes.
AJ loved that the illustrator put a face on the picture of the earth, and that the kids classroom looked fun, especially the caterpillar on the wall. She also said she learned things about protecting the earth that she didn't already know, like sea turtles might eat plastic we throw away. I'm not sure this would translate directly into a similar activity for your class (because the Earth can't actually write back) but the idea of doing a different thing each month that helps the earth is great. You could use this book at the beginning of the year and then brainstorm with the kids ideas for each month.
