AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants, which become the food for the newly hatched caterpillar. The caterpillar will eat till it is ready to turn into a chrysalis, a hard-shelled covering. When the chrysalis is ready to open, a monarch emerges. Monarchs live about 9 months and migrate south to warmer climates for the cold months. But they always return north to start the process all over again.
Gail Gibbon’s updated book relates the most recent information on the life of a butterfly. She also includes instructions on how to raise one. Both her illustration and writing are clear and informative. This is a must for any library.
