Otis is a little brown bat that soars and swoops through the
night, catching insects, drinking from ponds, then returning to his home roost.
His body structure, habits, and habitat are described in an accurate and
engaging way, and echolocation is explained in middle elementary language. Both
text and illustrations were reviewed by an outside source for accuracy.
The author says he loves bats, and it shows in the warm, yet
technically correct text; it’s clear and understandable. The illustrations are
muted, as one might expect in the night sky, yet nicely detailed. It’s so well
done; I hope that kids with an interest in natural science find this one.
