Stanley's mom has to take a short trip for work and rather than stay around with his dad and brother, Stanley heads into the backyard and boards his homemade spaceship. When the spaceship returns to Earth, a little martian (who looks a lot like Stanley!) crawls out. He informs Dad and the brother that martians do things a little different--not washing or brushing teeth and acting out a bit at school. The martian sticks around until Mom returns home and then heads back to Mars so Stanley can come home again.
This story is a fun approach to help kids who deal with parents traveling for work. I loved how accepting Stanley's family was of his martian appearance. The idea that this was a martian and not Stanley (when it was so clearly Stanley!) went a bit above my kids' heads but I think slightly older readers will appreciate it.
